Circular trip on the train from Settle to Carlisle and back via the Cumbrian Coast

We had an interesting day out on the train yesterday, starting from Settle on the famous Settle to Carlisle line, with the train driver greeting a group of school children with a blast on his horn as we crossed the Ribblehead Viaduct.   We had an hour to have a quick look at the main sights of Carlisle (the cathedral, castle and town centre) before catching a train along the west Cumbrian coast to Barrow-in-Furness.  Views across the Solway Firth to the mountains of south-west Scotland were followed by a glimpse of the Isle of Man as we passed Workington and Whitehaven and on south towards St.Bee’s Head.

A change of trains in Barrow gave time for a cup of tea and cake at a cafe in the town, before catching a train to Carnforth, where another change of train took us back to Gigglewick Station, on the outskirts of Settle, where we had parked our car in the morning.
